About
Art in Yorkshire goes Modern is a celebration
of modern and contemporary art in 27 galleries throughout Yorkshire
during 2012.
The idea of Art in Yorkshire is a simple one -
to encourage more people to explore the rich variety of the public
art galleries in Yorkshire during 2012. Last year Art
in Yorkshire - supported by Tate launched for the first
time and it proved to be a huge success with many more people
visiting galleries throughout the county. High points were the
David Hockney tour, the Damien Hirst exhibition and of course the
opening of The Hepworth Wakefield.
This year the theme is Art in Yorkshire goes Modern which
reflects Yorkshire's long and strong artistic tradition, and its
central role in the development of modernism in the UK. Building on
this tradition is new contemporary and innovative artistic practice
that is being shown in our public galleries alongside historic
collections.
Between May and late October, galleries in city, town and rural
locations present a rich and exciting programme that ranges from
20th century legends to contemporary art, photography to sculpture,
and includes famous names such as Andy Warhol, Joan Miró, Eduardo
Paolozzi and Anish Kapoor.
Art in Yorkshire goes Modern has been led by
York Museums
Trust with funding from Arts Council England and the
assistance of Welcome to Yorkshire.
The Art in Yorkshire iPhone app has been developed by Axis
- the online resource for contemporary art in collaboration
with digital agency fuse8 and in partnership with
Leeds Met Gallery & Studio Theatre. The concept
for the app emerged from Axis' involvement in the Artimelt
Academy, an Arts Council funded support programme for
organisations and individuals based in Yorkshire.
